Every Friday during the summer months, Ruby's in Redondo Beach has a little car gathering where all the old men come down for a dinner at 3 pm. Here's the time we make it down there, long after the cars are back in the garages and the guys and gals are off to bed. At least there are still a few cool things to shoot. Heres a couple snaps Aileen took while I was trying to catch the end of the Lakers inside.

This roadster, built and owned by Anders Berg, who currently is working for Jeb's Metal and Speed in Long Beach, California, has recently been sold and will soon be smashing through the streets of Scandinavia. Had a chance to drive it a bit while I shot some pics of it in Orange a few weeks back. Figured I would give some guys a last look at it before it gets settled in its new home.

I said I was going to do a post about my friend Lynn Bird and the great stuff he does all by himself in the comfort of his garage. Heres some pics courtesy of the man himself and one of his latest creations, the Surf Kart.

Below is his latest project. 29 rpu sectioned 2 inches, oddball doors, handmade cab back, shortened 8 inches bed, on a heavily modified '31 chevy frame with '36 ford x-member, flattened rear crossmember, handmade dash with a '31 nash gauge panel.

Here is a picture a friend of mine Lynn Bird sent me. Lynn is the epitome of the do it yourself hot rodder. Everything he turns out is always cool, and he is a great guy. I will eventually post some of his work but for now this is just a picture he sent me of his friend's dad. His friend is Keith Tucker and his father, Kenny, is the one pictured sometime in the 40s. Just seemed cool, so I thought I'd share.

we started to put together a new issue last night. i'm beginning to realize that 4 issues is a lot more serious than i imagined it to be. i've always seen this whole project in a stage of infancy but i think this hobby is slowly becoming an abiding situation... and i like that. the next couple of issues are exciting because matt and i both understand that the mag can be done in so many different ways without changing our original plans or ideas. i actually included a lot of film shots in the first few pages of the upcoming mag. we haven't done this before, but have plenty of contact sheets and prints from previous shoots and volumes 2 & 3. its kind of a shame that we both keep this mindset that once we get a few pictures of a certain car or shop, we're done and can put the camera down for the day. i'm constantly getting told that you can't be a photographer if you don't take any pictures. and i'm continuously learning from people around me, from advice, from mistakes. just a thought. hindsight is 20/20, right? we're always looking for input but are stubborn when it comes to the content of the book. people wonder where the photos of the rockabilly pinup chicks are or why a book with no words is fifteen dollars +.

the mag is a lot of work. no kidding. we do our own website, we take the photos, lay it all out ourselves, sit on press, develop our own film, print our own shirts.... its a lot of mileage and a lot of time and a lot of hours in front of the computer. sometimes i'd like to quit school and my job and do this shit full time. anyway, point is... the next issue is in the works and i'm not just saying that. we're both excited to be shooting again.

we just printed up some tees for our friend Jeb....just in time for GNRS. look for his booth! he's got a new line of column shift steering columns for automatic transmissions (based off of a shoebox Ford) & oil bath styled air cleaners that use a late model filter. he's got a '39 Ford Deluxe convertible on display- a mild custom in bare metal, chopped, skirts, all new metal work and a '40 Ford Dash that features one of his new steering columns (with a Hudson steering wheel).

Matt might think I'm really lame for writing a post about VW and their "lemons"....but Ive had a thing for 1960's advertising ever since Mad Men went on air 3 seasons ago. There's no doubt that Mid-Century advertising was the century for advertising. Take Doyle Dane Bernbach (or DDB) for example- the ad agency out of New York that was the mastermind behind all satirical and humorous TRUTH of the Beetle campaign ads of the 60s and so on... what great angles. Sell a car that everyone laughs at through charming honesty? It's lovable. And just as the ads made complete note of..."this ad is not a lemon"-

from the San Jose Business Journal: Smart Marketing:

"Unless you're old enough to remember, an advertising professional or an ad buff (if there is such a thing), you probably don't know much about the advertising campaign for the first Volkswagen Beetle. So a brief overview is in order.

Volkswagen hired the Doyle Dane Bernbach ad agency to create a campaign that would introduce the Beetle to the U.S. market in 1960. Now consider the marketing situation.Competing automakers were building even bigger cars for growing families with baby boomer children. The Beetle, on the other hand, was tiny and, well, ugly. Who would buy it? On top of this, the car was manufactured in Wolfsburg, Germany, at a plant built by the Nazis.Given that World War II had ended only 15 years earlier, it's easy to envision a public relations nightmare.

So, Matt and I have been heavily influenced by master b&w photographers from America's golden ages. William Gedney, Walker Evans, Danny Lyon, Berenice Abbott, Margaret Bourke-White etc.... are just a few. Ultra cool American photography is TOP. Black and white, high or low contrast, effortless composition that allows anyone to be transcended into any moment of any given image from the 40s-70s...this is great photography in our minds. If ever you wanted a good book on your coffee table, The Americans by Robert Frank is a total must-buy / must-have.

Anyone that has a liking for great motorcycle photography really needs to check out these guys for themselves. They are huge influences to me and obviously miles ahead of me with the lens. Adam Wright, a friend of mine, is absolutely amazing in my opinion and Scott Pommier, who i have yet to meet or see, is definitely right up there with him. Their style puts you right in that moment. Their pictures have a great feel to them. If you get a chance definitely look them up.
